Başkent Oda Orkestrası

Başkent Chamber Orchestra was established on December 1964 with the name of "Halkevleri Headquarters Orchestra" by the management of Fethi KOPUZ. The other founders are Dr. Refik ERER, Ph.D. Iskender BAYKA, Kenan GÖRGÜN and Nevzat ÖZKAN. In time with the increasing number of musicians, the name of the orchestra has been changed to "Ankara Amateur Chamber Orchestra". Although the members are amateurs, their music were at the level of professional orchestras. From 1982 to this day they have been playing with the name of "Capital Chamber Orchestra (B.O.O)".

The primary purpose of the orchestra is fulfil the need of "playing music together". Over the time, their efforts reached to public and they accomplished their aims. Later on, free concerts were presented to introduce the works of contemporary Turkish composers, as well as to present the polyphonic music to broad masses, especially to school students, to university youth, and to familiarize them with polyphony.

Another aim is to give young soloists and orchestra directors the opportunity to enter the stage for the first time. Very few of these young talents in our country have the opportunity to go to the stage with symphony orchestras. The orchestra has undertaken the task of an application school for them. Their duty in Turkish music life, without any material interest, have fulfilled by adhering to the views of great Atatürk towards universal music art.

The orchestra members include retired civil servants, teachers, engineers, architects, lawyers, doctors, lecturers, deputies, artists, students and housewives. The orchestra has been performing at festivals, memorials, anniversaries and youth concerts for 50 years. Ankara State Opera and Ballet General Directorate, Sevda Cenap And Music Foundation have been their major supporters in these challenging duties.
